Cloud communications is becoming a lot more European

Sentiment towards who should own the European cloud has only been heading in one direction for multiple years. And with the recent introduction of the EU Tech Sovereignty Package combined with increasing geopolitical tensions across the globe, ensuring European sovereignty has never been more important.

This is because this same sentiment is now being acted upon before legislation has even kicked in and there's already a growing list of consequences for providers.

Essentially, if you're an EU operator, how sovereign you are from top to bottom now dictates your autonomy levels, your operational resiliency and your risk profile.

Why EU sovereignty matters

There is currently mounting pressure for EU-wide legislation that aims to eventually put an immovable barrier between European cloud and outside influences, which of course includes cloud communications.
 
As that pressure builds we are also seeing that various nations are already getting ahead of any and all legislation and implementing rules of their own that bolster their own sovereignty at a country level.
 
The obvious outcome of this is that any public sector comms stack has to be sovereign to the EU, and if you don't adhere to certain commitments then you're cut off from the stable income that these institutions bring in. But there are also a lot of wide-reaching implications outside of governmental contracts.  
 
This means that in the upcoming years you have to be ready for everything you deliver to be European through and through. Not just connectivity, not just infrastructure, everything.
 
 
 
 

Attitudes are already being solidified and are materializing via the decision makers inside of your customers' organisations. Even if CADA doesn't make it past the proposal phase intact, this is just the latest shift in a years-long compliance cascade which is growing in scope and intensity.

Because of this, the potential impacts for providers within the EU are also growing and if you don't adjust accordingly you could be cut off from providing certain services even within your own country.

Yes, on paper this is currently limited to the public sector, but as mandated adoption grows there is nothing stopping private enterprises from seeing the use-cases for the added autonomy and risk reduction that sovereignization brings and applying it to the services they choose moving forward. 

The compliance cascade

The EU Tech Sovereignty Package and the CADA proposal that sits inside it are just the latest motion in a compliance cascade that has been affecting organizations on an EU-wide scale for close to a decade.

From how data is processed, to where it resides and most importantly which ex-EU influences can use, store or access that data, this compliance cascade has helped to slowly but surely make cloud communications more sovereign over the years. 

As you can see from the diagram below, this cascade is starting to grow exponentially and with much wider reaching implications in the form of both legislation and physical infrastructure. Critically, these acts are no longer standalone, each one serving to reinforce the other as the compliance stack grows. More importantly still, this compliance cascade shows a clear and obvious direction for the European cloud overall - Inwards. This in itself poses issues for providers who are not ready to cater to this new environment.

The result? If you're processing EU voice calls, call transcripts, interaction analytics or communications data you face the full force of the compliance cascade and all of it's consequences if you're in breach, with potentially stricter or more nuanced legislation coming in the future.
