Key-takeaways from MVNO Nation

This week I had the pleasure of being back in Valencia for another MVNO Nation Live. Three days of interesting talks, panel-debates, networking and also – lovely weather, which is an extra plus now when Sweden is nothing but cold and gray. Here are my Key Takeaways from the event. Let me know if you’re opinion differentiates from mine, it’s always nice with other people’s perspective!

1. MVNOs can make a true difference

MVNOs are making a powerful surge in the telecommunications industry. These agile players have always been relevant, and that relevance is only increasing. Unlike their larger counterparts, MVNOs are uniquely positioned to fine-tune their offerings to meet the needs of the SME market. This targeted approach is where MVNOs can truly make a difference.

For those MVNOs that recognize their value extends beyond merely providing budget-friendly SIM cards – success is on the horizon. They are not just running; they are leading the market. It’s in this sector that MVNOs find the space to innovate and stand out, providing tailored solutions that larger players often can’t match.

2. Co-opetition continues to be key

I’ve emphasized this before, and I’ll continue to do so: in today’s dynamic business landscape, success often means tearing down walls and forging partnerships, even with your competitors. The key lies in recognizing each other’s strengths and focusing on what you excel at. It’s about finding the right strategy that involves building, buying, and partnering.

Attempting to be the best at everything is neither practical nor advisable. Instead, it’s a strategic move to reach out to those who excel in areas where you may not. Seek out partnerships that bring mutual benefits and synergies. Embrace a mindset of collaboration.

Moreover, take pride in the services you genuinely excel in compared to your competitors. These are the areas where you can shine. Don’t shy away from exploring opportunities to extend these services to others, provided it’s a win-win scenario.

In today’s business world, success is often a result of collaboration, a willingness to acknowledge your strengths and weaknesses, and a commitment to creating mutually beneficial partnerships.

3. The world is digitalized, you must be too

On the stage, there was more than one MVNO who proudly proclaimed that they were the first true digital MNVO, and one of them probably was. But that’s in the past. What matters is now, and what will come in the future. Your competition will only grow stronger and you cannot afford to be analog in a digital world. Luckily – MVNO Nation Live was filled with people and companies that can help you achieve this goal. Hopefully, you found the right people to talk to and found your ways to build partnerships to strengthen your offering.

4. Will 5G really change the market?

That’s the million-dollar question, right? For many years, those kinds of events have been filled with people talking about the opportunities with 5G and how it will change the market. But if we’re being honest now, will it change the market? Or has it already done so? Well, the answer to that is not an easy one and probably depends on where your focus lies. For example – if you’re “only” providing mobile subscriptions in a Nordic country, then 5G certainly is a nice-to-have, but it is not and will not be a game-changer. But on the other hand, if you’re providing IoT SIM cards or eSIM’s, 5G might be more than essential.

So, what am I trying to say? Before you spend all your time staring yourself blind at 5G – make sure that it’s essential to your market and that the work is worthwhile.

5. Develop your offer to stay relevant

This can’t be emphasized enough. Just selling SIM cards or eSIMs will not be enough to stay relevant in the future. And it doesn’t matter if you’re a B2C or a B2B MVNO, you will need to develop your offering. It can be other services, smarter services, or more relevant services but it can also be different ways of bundling, charging, and selling your services. The market is changing. Millennials and Gen Z won’t buy the same products and services in the same way as older generations did, and if you don’t adopt, you’ll be obsolete in the market without realizing what happened.

At Dstny we focus on the B2B markets, and we have the products your business need to stay relevant. We can provide MVNOs with the tools to boost your offering and help you become more digitalized. And if you see us as competitors; don’t! Co-opetition is key here. We might not be the right fit if you’re only looking at a 5G offering, but if you want to develop your B2B offer in any other way I’m sure we are a match!
